Bed bugs, which had not been prevalent since WWII, have made a resurgence during the past decade. Small and secretive, bed bugs were a challenge to find. Much time can be spent for a technician to conduct a thorough inspection for bed bugs with no assurance of accurate findings.
It was only a question of time before someone came up with the idea that dogs could be trained to find bed bugs. After all, dogs are used to find drugs, bombs, cadavers, mold and even cancer, so why not bed bugs. Almost all things have their own "scent signature". Bed bugs are no different. Dogs can be trained to detect one live bed bug and to do it with 97% accuracy. To avoid confusion, dogs are not trained to find dead bed bugs.
"Team Bugsy" is the highly-qualified canine scent detection staff at Braman. Together with their handler, Donna Evans, they constitute a team. Team is the key word. Team Bugsy has been trained to the standard required by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) and is certified by the Integrated Bed Bug Management Association (IBBMA).
Their initial training programs lasted 12 weeks. Every member of Team Bugsy is trained to detect one live bed bug and to be able to find a single live bed bug in a variety of settings such as homes, apartments, hotel rooms, offices, retail stores, college dormitories, vehicles and movie theaters.
